Vikings defeat Gulf Coast State College in 4
Palatka, FL The #12 SJR State College Vikings defeated visiting Gulf State College 16-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-20 to improve their record to 23-4, 12-1 in conference play.
Set 1
The Vikings and Commodores went back and forth, trading sideouts, with neither team having a lead larger than 1 point until Gulf Coast went on a 10-2 run turning a 15-14 lead into a 25-16 win. Rickie Sheets and Cassidy Casey each had 3 kills in the opening set.
Set 2
Gulf Coast jumped out to an 8-4 lead before the Vikings caught the at 12-12. The Vikings pulled ahead by as many as 5, leading 19-14 before surrendering a 8 point run to fall behind 19-22. The Viking fought off 2 set points to tie the set at 24 all. The Vikings 4th set point was the final point as an ace by Luna ended the set. Mayya Kucherova led the Vikings with 7 points in the set on 5 kills and 2 aces. Dariana Luna had 2 aces and 10 digs to lead SJR State.
Set 3
The Vikings jumped out to a quick lead at 4-1 and continued to stay in front by 2-4 points until a serving run by Mone Gordon gave them a 6 point lead at 20-14. Another serving run by Kirby Mason helped SJR State to a 23-16 lead but the Commodores came fighting back winning the next 5 points to cut the lead to 2, 23-21. The teams traded points with the Vikings winning the set on a Commodore hitting error. Kendal Hatchet had 4 kills to lead SJR State.
Set 4
Both teams struggled to sideout as Gulf Coast was the first to 10. The Viking looked like they might pull away building a 14-11 lead but the Commodores came back to tie the set at 17 all. A 3 point run gave Gulf Coast a 20-17 lead. The Vikings were able to side out and then Kuchorova went on a 8 point serving run to finish the match. Casey led with 7 kills while Kucherova had 3 aces.

This was a tough, hard fought win for us. We did not play our best, especially on offense. Our timely blocking and serving was the difference today.
